THE CENTER FOR CAPTIVE CHIMPANZEE CARE IN FORT PIERCE, FLORIDA Contains Largest Number of Chimps in the United States
In 1997 the United States Air Force announced it would get rid of it's space chimps at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico, since they were no longer needed for lab experiments. A divesture authorized by Congress allowed the chimps to go to either a research laboratory or a sanctuary. Determined the chimps should live out the rest of their lives in safety and comfort, Carole Noon undertook the establishment of the Center for Captive Chimpanzee Care. |
All chimps arriving at the sanctuary showed signs of trauma from being used in lab and space experiments. Tammy (above) has overcome and enjoys the comfort, safety, and spaciousness of her new “forever home.” |
Now, four and a half years later, the sanctuary is complete with an introduction building, group housing, a 2.4 acre chimpanzee island with climbing structures, ropes and tiers, administration building, kitchen, and housing for the caretakers. The center presently houses 24 space chimps. |
You can help in the continual care of the chimpanzees and optional costs of the sanctuary.
